So you are ready to set up your digital photo albums.
You have two options on this page. You can click on the video and you
will see a visual demonstration of how to set up your files for storing your
digital photos (ie your digital photo albums). Alternatively you can scroll down
and get the same information in the form of text and screen shots
Most people will want to set up Holiday Photo Albums, Wedding Photo Albums,
Family Photo Albums and other titles under which to store their photos.
You have to start thinking of the storage of digital photos as a physical
thing just like storing "real" photographs. You wouldn't just take your holiday
pictures and throw them anywhere in your house. If you do, you will never be
able to find specific photographs again when you need to.
Instead, you set up your digital photo albums on your hard drive before you
download the photos to your computer. So lets get started.
Every new PC comes with a folder called "My Pictures". To locate this click
on Start and then My Pictures
When you click on My Pictures the folder opens on screen. It usually has one
folder of sample pictures in it already.
We now want to make a new folder specific to our needs in the MY Pictures
folder. To do this, go to File then New then Folder
When you left click on Folder a new folder waiting to be named appears in
your My Pictures folder.
To name this folder, you just type the title you want to give it and either
press enter or left click anywhere in the blank space in the folder. In this
case, I am calling my folder "Camera Pics March 2008".
You repeat this process, creating folders each time you want to download photos
from your camera. If you get into good habits doing this you will always be able
to locate your photos based on when they were taken, or by the event at which
they were taken.
Another method for creating folders is to right-click in a blank part of the my
pictures folder, go down to New and then Folder
This gives the same result as before. A new folder opens, waiting for you to
give it an appropriate name.
You are now able to set up folders for your photos, Congratulations!
There are a number of programs that you will regularly use to view and edit
your photos. You will need to create desktop shortcuts to these programs. This
avoids having to go Start / All Programs and then select the program each
time you need it. Learn how to create desktop shortcuts
